Abstract
Artisanal exploitation of stones and gravels in Bukavu, like in
the rest of DR Congo, is a sub-activity of artisanal mining sector oriented in
building materials domain.
Despite its contribution to increase incomes of the persons
involved in it, job creation, provincial budget participation and provision of
materials for construction, artisanal exploitation of stones and gravels
remains less documented. As the rest of the global mining sector, it's still
exposed to problems to be resolved within the working sites in terms of
security, hygiene and environment protection.
The field inquest is conducted in four working sites: two sites
in urban area against two other sites in rural entity. In total, 80 artisanal
miners constitute the sample which is submitted to an interview guide. The same
guide interview is applied as a questionnaire by 4 persons who ask for this
arguing their unavailability to get so much time to answer directly the
interview guide. Documentary and descriptive approaches, free interviews are
methods we use to complete information collected by interview guide.
For rational exploitation of these natural resources, public
power has to accomplish fully his role regarding facilitation, legal texts
application and activity organization instead of limit his intervention on
taxes collecting. The artisanal miners' committees should as well be more
strong leaders, example of good governance and pro initiatives so they can
correctly serve interests of artisanal miners and keep accountable to these
lasts. These committees should give birth to a Cooperative of stones and gravel
artisanal miners. This should aim to promote the activity under study.
Businessmen are welcomed in the sector in order to modernize it
by introducing small machines in the production of stones and gravels. Whether
this condition is fulfilled, the stones and the gravels produced could widen
the circle of customers and easily be sold over the country.
