Résumé
La culture maraîchère en milieux urbain et
péri-urbain joue un rôle important au plan social et
économique dans la vie de la population béninoise. Ce secteur est
aujourd'hui en pleine extension. Cependant, l'offre en produits
maraîchers au Bénin en général, et dans les
principales villes en particulier, demeure largement au-dessous de la demande.
Pour comprendre l'offre des produits maraîchers au Sud-Bénin, la
présente étude s'est consacrée à identifier et
à caractériser les différents types d'exploitations
maraîchères au Sud-Bénin. L'étude s'est
déroulée dans deux zones agro-écologiques du
Bénin : la zone soudano-guinéenne sur des terres de barre et
la zone sableuse littorale et fluvio-lacustre. Un échantillon de 136
exploitations maraîchères choisies de manière
raisonnée a été enquêté dans les deux zones.
La méthode de classification hiérarchique basée sur
l'algorithme de ward, a permis de distinguer au Sud-Bénin, trois (3)
types d'exploitations maraîchères. Les critères
utilisés à cet effet sont : la superficie exploitée,
le site écologique, la main-d'oeuvre, le niveau d'équipement,
l'accès au crédit, les types de légumes produits,
l'encadrement, les méthodes de lutte contre les ravageurs etc. la
production des légumes au Sud-Bénin procède donc de trois
types d'exploitations maraîchères :
- type 1 : exploitations traditionnelles en
bas-fonds (Vallée de l'Ouémé, Grand Popo);
- type 2 : exploitations modernes en milieu intra-urbain
(Cotonou, Porto Novo);
- type 3 : exploitations modernes en zone littorale
(Grand Popo, Sèmè Kpodji).

Typology of vegetable production systems in southern
Benin
Abstract
Vegetable production in urban area plays an important role at
the social and economic scheme in Benin. It is a sector in full extension in
urban environment in south Benin. It's appear today among the main dies
retained by the government as priority for the country. But vegetables
productions remain low and cannot cover the demands of peoples in the urban
areas in Benin. To understand the offer of vegetable, this study has devoted to
identify and characterize the various types of vegetable production system in
southern Benin. The study area has covered two major agroecological zones in
south Benin. Field survey data were collected from a total of 136 vegetable
producers selected across the two agroecological zones. Data were analysed
using descriptive statistics. The cluster of vegetable production system is
procedure Ward's Minimum Variance Cluster Analysis. Results show that there are
three (3) types of vegetable production system in South Benin, basing on
criteria such as: the operated area, the labour, the level of equipment, the
access to the credit, types of produced vegetables, the framing methods of
fight against pest, etc. There are:
- type 1: traditional farming system in shallows;
- type 2: modern farming system in urban area;
- type 3: modern farming system in sandy soil of the coast.
