Conclusion

This study was aimed to the characterization of the structure of grasshoppers communities associated with agricultural ecosystems in three localities situated in Mzab valley, Septentrional Sahara, Algeria. Our results point to the fact that species richness and diversity was higher in undisturbed sites, which indicate that the various levels of disturbances play a crucial role to sustain the Acridid populations. Differences in grasshopper communities in agricultural ecosystems cannot be attributed solely to the disturbances of these environments, because various studies suggest that local grasshopper communities showing predictable structure based on diet preferences of individual species, their microhabitat selection, interspecific competition and predation (Joern 1992; Joern & Klucas 1993; Belovsky & Slade 1995).

The present findings indicate that grasses inside and around the fields supported a large number of grasshopper species. Appropriate measures should be taken to minimizing of the disturbances and loss of natural habitats as this would have a negative effect on the composition and abundance of the Acridid community in Algeria. Further research on the Acridid biodiversity and taxonomy will continue in this area, in order to get better and more comprehensive information on those aspects.
