ABSTRACT
This document is the training period result during 4 months
within to NGO CAB, for leading an agrarian system study in Safo rural commune,
situated to 14 km in north-west of Bamako.
It is situated in soudanian climate, Safo commune takes
advantage of rainfall, hesitated between 650 and 750 mm. The relief is marked
by the Madingues Mounts characterized a succession of plateau, slopes, small
plains and sleazy areas. The mains rain crops are cereal crops and
groundnuts.
The commune knows changes of its agrarian system since the
seventies drought. The rainfall deficit and the livestock decreasing has been
brought fertility degradation and an important production decreasing. Also, the
population growth and the land pressure exerted by Bamako city contributed to
reduce useable surface land on arable areas. Commercial crop that are developed
following in house gardens and sleazy areas (market garden, arboriculture)
replaced the food deficit and constituted the main cash income farming.
In this context, the study stakes is to analyze strategies
developed by farmers to assure food security and farming sustainability.
The field work had allowed to identify 5 kinds of farmers that
incomes dependent greatly to the land availability in the plain and sleazy area
access to diversify and intensify their productions. Indeed, the arboriculture
and the market garden are the means to pass the standard level of survival.
Also, this study shows that it is necessary to go with poorest farmers for
assuring their farming system sustainability. To give small ruminants credit
farmers, and to organize the producers for commercialization of their
productions are the ways that could be develop in future interventions in Safo
commune.
