ABSTRACT
In Côte d'Ivoire, the culture of Anacardium
occidentale has been initiated for reforestation of fallows. But, this
culture became quickly the main economical activity of the farmers in the
Center and North due to its socio-economic advantages. In all favorable zones
in terms of cashew nuts productivity, the farmers have adopted the culture
without any technical support from trainers since it was offering lot of
opportunities which consists on improving economic condition and having a long
life asset. With the support of government extension services for new culture
techniques, Côte d'Ivoire became the world first exporter and second
world producer after India on 2008. The campaign of 2009 is a failure with
almost 60,000 metric tons not sold, since the 2010 campaign is running already.
India, which is the main importer with 85% of Côte d'Ivoire production,
is running a vast program of cashew nuts production, and could produce enough
for its needs. In addition to this aspect, on international market there is no
price for row cashew nuts, the prices are set for shelled nuts. Then, only one
opportunity remains, it's the local manufacturing. To not get in troubles,
Côte d'Ivoire government should help everybody who wants to invest in row
cashew nuts manufacturing by reducing or abandoning the taxes on imported
machinery. If the government of Côte d'Ivoire looks for a sustainable
development, the cashew nuts production should be reorganized. The politics
should work for the exportation of semi and finished products and quit the
market of row cashew nuts sales. Finally, the government should encourage the
local consumption by sensitization on cashew nuts virtues.
