Abstract
The liberalization of telecommunications has led to a
competitive dynamic between the two operators (SOTELMA/Malitel and Orange Mali)
and reorganization of urban space of Bamako. However, it should be noted that
the dynamics of reconstruction are compounded by the conquest of space by the
operators, which means, the strategies to get more customers. So, which implies
an increase in the number of users and new appreciation of the area where they
live.
By reducing travel, the attachment of its users, increasing
publicity posters in the streets, at the edges of highways, the antennas on
hills and roofs of buildings, etc.., the mobile phone contributes significantly
to the reorganization of urban space. It's no longer bound to a space (homes,
services, cabins etc.) which, user must always be on hand to answer calls; it
became tool for individual communication of anyplace providing there is a
wireless network.
With increasing of mobility in Bamako, the city is now
located here and there, which involves the intensive use of mobile
phones. Mobility that always means shift from one point to another on the
physical plane, but also virtually. Mobility and space are two complementary
concepts. Mobility here takes place in a spatial context.
The transmission of telephone information creates new
function of physical space. By information space, we understand here the
control of space by mobile telephony over the physical space. In conclusion, we
are facing to the reorganization of urban space. As a new social phenomenon,
the expansion of mobile telephony is noted particularly in Bamako.
